Understanding Bourbon Labels What “Small Batch,” “Single Barrel,” and “Bottled-in-Bond” Really Mean

Why Bourbon Labels Can Be Confusing

Many bottles include marketing terms that may not have strict legal definitions. Understanding which labels are regulated and which are descriptive helps buyers evaluate products accurately.

Straight Bourbon

“Straight Bourbon” must be aged at least two years and contain no added flavoring or coloring. If aged less than four years, the age must be stated.

Small Batch

There is no fixed legal definition for “small batch.” It typically indicates bourbon blended from a limited number of barrels. Practices vary by producer.

Single Barrel

A single barrel bourbon is bottled from one individual barrel rather than blended across multiple barrels. Flavor variations are natural due to barrel aging differences.

Bottled-in-Bond

This is a legally regulated designation. Requirements include:

  • Produced by one distiller
  • Made in a single distilling season
  • Aged at least four years
  • Bottled at exactly 100 proof

Age Statements and Transparency

If a bourbon includes an age statement (e.g., 10 years), that number reflects the youngest bourbon in the bottle.

Final Thoughts

Understanding terminology allows buyers to interpret labels accurately and compare products more effectively.
